BLUEGRASS
NOW MAGAZINE
The Message, an all gospel project, showcases an extraordinary band. In addition to the spiritual message, this release says even more: "Here is a group to watch. They know how to deliver a song." Given the right breaks "New Road" will be around a long time. Sixteen bars into the first track I knew this recording would be a winner. The drive and soul of each song reflect a strong work ethic designed to provide enjoyable, meaningful listening pleasure for fans of traditional bluegrass. These men are passionate about their music, which is an obvious extension of their religious beliefs. Vocal harmonies are consistently right and each selection is steeped in the gospel tradition of the Southern Appalachians. Musical support is solids, but never overpowering. New Road understands that lyrics must always be at the forefront. Garry Kidwell penned six tunes, but the most appealing one is "The Peace He Brings." This cut is the project's centerpiece. Other highlights include two straight ahead bluegrass arrangements, "Render Your Heart" and "One Drop," a heartfelt "Servant's Prayer," a compelling "Waiting, Watching, Praying," and the expressive "Just Look Up to God." New Road members include: Gary Kidwell on guitar, lead and baritone vocals; Stuart Wyrick on banjo, guitar and baritone vocals. Doug Johnson on acoustic bass: Tom Brantley on fiddle, lead, tenor and bass vocals; Mike Ramsey on mandolin, clawhammer banjo, lead and tenor vocals; and Vic Graves on resonator guitar, lead, baritone and bass vocals. On a five-point scale of bluegrass gospel excellence, this release merits an inspiring five. BM |
